Matcha madness has made its way from coffee shops into beauty cabinets.

If you are among the flock of people that have traded in your regular cup o’ coffee, for a matcha tea latte, then you are in luck: your caffeine fix is the hottest new ingredient popping up in every skincare product.

Green tea isn’t exactly a new skincare ingredient. In fact, matcha is a Japanese tea that has been used for centuries, but its inclusion into Western beauty has become a trend only recently. Unlike regular green tea, matcha is farmed and processed in a specific way that helps to preserve antioxidants — in fact, it contains 137 times the antioxidants found in other green teas.

This high concentration helps to reduce inflammation and can repair damage from environmental factors, acne and scarring. Most importantly, it contains catechins, which help the skin combat harmful effects of free radicals. Using products with matcha also helps to add plumpness to the skin.

Of course, drinking matcha tea is great for you as well, but applying it topically ensures that the ingredients are directly treating your skin concerns. The powdered form of matcha is much more concentrated, so for the most impact, it is best to choose masks or scrubs instead of liquid products.

Now you can Instagram your matcha tea and your matcha mask.
