As the weather warms up, we’re once again on an eternal hunt for the perfect white wine to match our summer plans. So when we got invited to the Rueda wine showroom at Patria, it seemed like an obvious choice to attend. The showroom featured 35 wines from 21 wineries from the Rueda region and took our taste buds on a tantalizing adventure.
The Rueda region is located in Castile and Léon, 170 km northwest of Madrid. The region specializes in producing the Verdeja grape, which is a top-selling white wine in spain. The vineyards in the region are incredibly rich due to the ideal climate conditions, and the Verdeja grape is steeped in history, having been developed and produced over the course of 1000 years. The grape is a combination of herbal flavours and intense fruit and acidity.
We had the pleasure of tasting almost every bottle in the room and managed to narrow it down to some of our favourites.
Janine Vedel Verdejo Ecologico
As someone who gravitates toward anything organic this bottle from Herrero Bodega was my first pick. This wine is extremely well-balanced and combines tropical fruit notes with citrus. It was smooth and refreshing and pairs well with shellfish, cured meats, vegetarian dishes and pork.
Bodegas Castelo de Medina
A crisp, fresh, dry white with hints of lemon, flowers and tropical notes. This wine from Bodegas Castelo de Medina is the perfect pairing for a hot summer’s day. It would also pair really well with white fish.
This white wine from Bodegas Verdeal contains moderate acidity with distinct aromas of green apple, pear and herbs. It leaves a floral aftertaste in your mouth with a hint of citrus. It would pair well with cured meats, vegetarian dishes, shellfish and pork.
